AUDION

THE AUDION SILVER NIGHT SERIES

The Silver Night Series represents Audion’s best Intermediate Level products.

  • As is the case for all Audio products, they are priced very competitively and outperform anything at their price points.

  • The Silver Night Series includes 5 Stereo Amplifiers and 2 Monoblocks offering progressively higher power output, and designed respectively around the 2A3, the PX25 and the 300B tube types.

  • All 4 Stereo Amplifiers are SET Class A types. The two 300B Monoblock amplifiers are pure PP and PSE designs respectively.

  • The Silver Night range can reproduce subtleties and nuances in music that cannot be found in other amps of this price.  Auto biased, they have very conservative watt ratings, which is equal to almost twice their rating if tested by competitors methods.

  • The current Silver Night Anniversary is now a 5th Generation product, originally being first introduced in 1987. This long-standing heritage is the foundation of Audion's excellent global reputation.

Standard Features and Options

  • Alll amplifiers include a volume attenuator, whether they are Streo Power amps or Monoblock amps.

  • This standard volume control feature essentially makes them "Integrated" amps, but in their basic versions they are "purist", and are thus delivered with one single-ended source input.

  • All of the Stereo amps are wired for 8 ohms, however they have a 4 ohm tapping that can be changed internally. Monoblocks come with both.

  • However, and in addition to the standard volume attenuator, all Stereo amplifier types can be ordered with the following 2 options :

    • All Silver Knight Series amplifiers : Optional Upgrade to 5 single-ended Inputs plus 1 Output

    • A very high quality European Remote Volume Control unit.

AUDION Silver Night DUO -  45/ 2A3/300B

The Audion Silver Night Anniversary DUO is different from other amps in that the user can tube roll between any 300B, any 2A3 or any type 45 tube. Naturally, more care as to choice of speaker is needed.

Like all our amplifiers it is hand built. The amp is a zero feedback design and is auto biased.

Depending on the output tube used, the DUO will deliver CLEAN 2.5 (45 tube), 3.5 (2A3) or 8 (300B) CLEAN WATTS into 8 ohms. In the DUo's case, Audion's CLEAN WATT rating equates to power of competitive amps boasting 5 to16W, depending on which tube is used.

Tube rolling is easily done as the amp is auto biased. Switching between tubes is done at the rear by swapping fuse positions, whilst the heater voltages are adjusted via a self sensing circuit within the amp.

Loudspeakers  compatibility :

  • 89db or better efficiency for 300B

  • 95 db or better for 2A3

  • 98db or greater for type 45.

AUDION Silver Night 300B Monoblock - PSE / PP

This is our intermediate level Monoblock, zero feedback, Monoblock amplifier, using 300B tubes in either PSE or PP mode.

Both versions are hand built and are point to point hard wired, whilst using solid silver 5 -Nine wire in some of the audio path.

The amps are auto biased. They will take almost any 300B . The units are supplied with JJ 300 tubes, but can also be made with PX25 or 2A3 tubes upon request.

A front volume control and mono inputs on the rear means that a pre-amplifier is not necessary with this unit, but is advised .These amplifiers have mono inputs and both 4 and 8 ohm outputs.

PSE MODE

In PSE mode it delivers a conservative 18 CLEAN watts into 8 ohms.  Therefore, it has the power of competitors boasting 34-36W.

The Audion Paralleled Single Ended (PSE) is not too analytical, but very clean and musical ... and very transparent.

In PSE mode it is best suited for use with loudspeakers of 88db or better efficiency

PP MODE

In PP mode it delivers a conservative 24 CLEAN watts into 8 ohms.  Therefore, it has the power of competitors boasting 40-45W.

The PP in our opinion is more bass heavy than the PSE but also less refined. The greater power output is better suited to less efficient loudspeakers. It is a very musical amp, but critical of very well matched and balanced tubes, ideal where power is needed.

In PP mode it is best suited for use with loudspeakers of 86db or better efficiency

SILVER NIGHT SERIES TUBES

6922 / 6N23P / 7308 / E88CC / 6DJ8 / CCa / PCC88

Implementation:  All Silver Night amplifiers, except 300B PSE Monoblock

The tube rollers Dream Tube !  The 6DJ8 is a miniature 9-pin medium gain dual triode vacuum tube. It is distinguished by its very high transconductance, mostly the result of its frame grid construction.

Developed by Amperex, the American division of Philips in 1958. In Europe, it was developed by Philips in the Netherlands under European designation ECC88. The series-string version 7DJ8 / PCC88 was also introduced at the same time. The 7308 is a premium 6922.

Although not originally designed for the purpose, it became popular in hi-fi audio amplifiers. An industrial (improved/higher ratings) version of the tube was designated 6922 / E88CC between 1959 and 1961. Siemens introduced their own super ECC88 / 6DJ8 at the same time under CCa type. New Old Stock (NOS) 6DJ8s and ECC88s produced in the past by major American or West European vacuum tube manufacturers (such as Philips or Amperex) remain extremely popular with and highly sought by audiophiles. A version (direct equivalent) of this tube was also produced in the Soviet Union as 6N23P (Russian: 6Н23П) and in China as 6N11.

The Russian NOS 6N23P is used extensively throughout the Audion Line as an Input / Driver tube.

Basic data: Uf=6.3V, If=300 mA, uM=33, Ia=15 mA, S=12.5 mA/V, Pa=1.7 W

6N1P (6H1N)

Implementation:  300B Monoblock PSE, PX25 SET Stereo, 300B SET Stereo

The 6N1P (Russian: 6Н1П) is a NOS Russian-made miniature 9-pin medium gain double triode vacuum tube intended for use as a line audio amplifier and cathode driver.

A ruggedized/extended ratings version of the tube is designated 6N1P-EV (Russian: 6Н1П-ЕВ).

It has currently found a use as a driver tube because of its excellent low distortion and low noise characteristics. The tube is still being manufactured by the "Voshod" plant in Kaluga, Russia.

The 6N1P's sonic character is crisp and energetic. its overall presentation is bold and full bodied in the mid-band. Highs are detailed, but not overly exhagerated. and base line definition is well articulated and solid.

The 6N1P distinguishes itself due to its higher input sensitivity and amplification factor, which makes it partricularly compatible in amplifiers driving low sensitivity / low impedance loudpeakers.

Basic data: Uf=6.3V, If=600 mA, uM=35, Ia=7.5 mA, S=4.35 mA/V, Pa=2.2 W

2A3

Implementation:  Audion Silver Night 2A3 SET

To afficionados of single-ended triode (SET) power amplifiers, the 2A3, directly-heated triode is the stuff of legends. Many believe it has the best balance : a superior melding of audio charm and power compared to other power triodes.

The 2A3 is essentially two 45’s in parallel in the same envelope. Along with the 300B and the PX25, this tube is one of a handful of SET DHTs still in production today. Its lineage included such tubes as the 10Y, 71, 45/245, the 50/250, the 6A3, the British PX4, the 6BG4, the VT-25 and the VT-52.

Most tube lovers still give the NOS 45s the nod in the treble and for overall elegance, but agree that the "modern day"  JJ 2A3s take the lead in body, image density and midrange presence.

The 2A3's  filament current is 2.5 amps per tube, and most NOS versions of this tube have a 300 volt maximum plate voltage rating, although several new production “2A3 types” have higher ratings.

Basic data: Uf=6.3V, If=1.5A, Ua=250, Ia=100 mA, S=11 mA/V, Pa=25 W, Ri=15Ko

PX25

Implementation:  Audion Silver Night PX25 SET

Marconi-Osram Valve Co. introduced the PX25 directly-heated triode - a British tube that was originally designed and manufactured in the mid 20s by GEC. The tube stayed in production until the end of WW II when it became a casualty of a new breed of beam power tubes (e.g., KT-66) which were capable of more bang for the buck.

The KR version, used in the Audion PX25 SET, is a copy of the original, but it cannot comfortably handle in excess of 370 V plate voltage versus the original's 450 V. Most cautious designers run this tube at a bit less than it's maximum (around 360v) where the distortion level is at it's best.

So what's the attraction to the PX25? This tube measures more linearly than most other "single ended" triodes (SET) and better than any new production tube. The PX25 tube is said to feature a midrange sound similar to that of 2A3 but with more extension at the frequency extremes, and of course more power. The slightly higher plate resistance, relative to a 300B, allows for the implementation of output transformers with an extended bandwidth - beyond what is typical for 300B or 2A3 based amplifiers.

As for a PX25's typical sound characteristics -- its midrange clarity approaches, but does not quite equal the benchmark of the 2A3. In contrast, the PX25 is a warmer, more luxurious sounding tube. This tube gets much closer to what some tube-ophiles refer to as "velvet in a bottle", more so than either the 300B or the 2A3. As one well know reviewer said of it : "It is the sonic equivalent of a rich milk shake".

Basic data: Uf=4V, If=2A, Ua=300, Ia=45 mA, S=8 mA/V, Pa=13 W, Ri=1.3Ko

300B

Implementation:  SN 300B SET, SN 300B Special Edition, 300B PSE and PP Monoblocks

The 300B is a directly-heated power triode vacuum tube with a four-pin base, introduced in 1938 to amplify telephone signals. It measures 6.4 inches high and 2.4 inches wide, and the anode can dissipate 40 watts. In the 1980s it started to be used increasingly by audiophiles in home audio equipment. The 300B's qualities included good linearity, low noise and good reliability; making it an ideal tube for use in single-ended triode (SET) audio amplifiers of about eight watts output; a push-pull pair can output 20 watts.

As of 2012 manufacturers of 300B and other tubes of similar characteristics included EH Electro Harmonix, Emission Labs - EML, JJ Electronics, KR Audio, Shuguang, Sovtek, Svetlana, TJ FullMusic and Westrex Corporation.

The 300A tube, precursor to the 300B, was first manufactured in 1933 by Western Electric. The 300B appeared on the scene in 1938, identical to the 300A, except that the bayonet pin in the base was rotated 45 degrees so that the 300B could serve as a replacement for the 205A. The 300A/B had a 5-volt, 1.2-amp filament and a maximum plate voltage of 480 volts. The listed typical characteristics for class A operation are 300 volts at 60 mA with an amplification factor of 3.8 and a power output of 6 watts. Most amplifier builders today run the 300B at higher plate voltages.

Several characteristics have endeared the WE 300B to those of us who are interested in high quality audio sound. In the thirties, no other tube had as much output as the 300B. except for a transmitting tube. The Western Electric 205D could produce about one watt. The same was true of the 45. The 50 tube doubled the output of the 45, but the 300B produced six to eight watts in single-ended operation.

Basic data: Uf=5V, If=1.2A, Ua=350, Ia=70 mA, S=5 mA/V, Pa=20 W, Ri=4Ko
